Announcements for the Week of April 14 to 21 2011

International Student Travel Preparation and I-20 Signing Days

As in the past, the International Student Advisors are setting aside a number of times where F-1 students can drop by the UC 116 to obtain a travel signature (required for re-entry to the U.S. after international travel) and talk with an advisor regarding any travel or visa preparations. We encourage ALL students traveling outside of the U.S. this summer to take advantage of coming to the office during "signing days" as it will ensure an expedited I-20 signature. In addition we will provide some light snacks to enjoy in case there is a short wait time to see an advisor.

Tuesday, April 19th 1-3pm

Friday, April 22nd 2-4pm

Wednesday, April 27th 11:30am-1:30pm
(please note that we changed the date one week later, to STUDY DAY, due to an unavoidable conflict)

The Office will be closed until 1:30pm on Wednesday April 20

Please note that the ISSO will be closed next Wednesday until regular walk-in advising hours begin at 1:30pm.  Please do not come to pick-up/drop-off documents or ask to see an Advisor in the morning as the office will not be open;  thank you!

Tax Information

APRIL 16, 2011 (this Saturday) is the last day that a student filing a tax return can receive assistance from the UAH VITA site.

Individuals who were physically present in the U.S. any day in 2010 in an F or J status but did not work in the U.S. in the tax year 2010 or who earned less than $3650 in taxable income or scholarships ONLY need to complete the tax form 8843 and mail it to the IRS by April 18, 2011. Attached are the form 8843 instructions, NO TAX LIABILITY, that go line by line through completing and mailing the form 8843 to the IRS. Students who are concerned about completing the form 8843 correctly, AFTER READING THE INSTRUCTIONS, can attach the form 8843 to an email to the tax@uah.edu account to request a volunteer to review the form or visit the ISSO DURING WALK-IN ADVISING HOURS no later than FRIDAY, APRIL 15th.

Individuals who earned more than $3650 may have a tax liability and should meet with a VITA volunteer to get FREE tax assistance. Complete the form 8843 using the TAX LIABILITY instructions and email the tax@uah.edu account BY APRIL 15th at 4pm. F and J students should in general, not complete tax forms using “TURBO TAX” like software advertised for U.S. Citizen Taxpayers who complete a 1040 form.

1)      Send an email to tax@uah.edu
2)      Complete the  form 8843 for students with a tax liability and attach it to the email

HIPHOPISTAN: Representing Locality in a Global City
Monday, April 25th, 7:00pm in the University Center Exhibit Hall
HIPHOPISTAN is a documentary film that examines the impact of hip-hop culture on Istanbul youth and reveals how young Turkish rappers, DJs, break-dancers, and graffiti artists creatively blend popular influences with their local cultural values and traditions.
About the Director: Çiğdem Akbay (born and raised by Turkish immigrants in Huntsville, Alabama) has spent the past five years in Istanbul, Turkey conducting anthropological research and working on various film projects. HIPHOPISTAN is a result of her growing interest in the relationships between Istanbul youth, cultural identity, and globalization. Residing between Los Angeles and Istanbul, she hopes to continue shooting documentary films dealing with similar themes.
