Off campus work authorization WORKSHOPS

If you are graduating spring or summer 2011 and have not attended an off campus employment workshop, sign up today.  For students graduating in May 2011 the priority date to send an OPT application to USCIS is February 18, 2011.  9 workshops dates have been selected to accommodate student schedules. Off campus employment includes internships, Cooperative Education or other practical training that is not on the UAHuntsville campus. TAX INFORMATION

Once again the International Student and Scholar Office and the College of Business Beta Alpha Psi Accounting Honor Society will collaborate to offer FREE tax assistance to the UAHuntsville students and community.  Specific details about the FREE tax assistance schedule will be announced shortly.
Until then, you can prepare for the tax season by reading this email and CAREFULLY following the instructions.

If you were physically present in the U.S. any day in the year 2010, you will need to complete a form 8843 for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). A completed form 8843 is all that an F1, F2, J1, or J2 student or scholar will need to complete if they have no tax liability.
Having no tax liability means 1) you were not employed during tax year 2010 OR 2) you did not receive more than $3650 income or taxable scholarships during tax year 2010 (January 1, 2010-December 31, 2011). The deadline for submitting Form 8843 to the IRS for the 2010 tax year is April 18, 2011.
If you received more than $3650 in income or scholarships you may have a tax liability and will need to complete the Form 8843 using the instructions attached for students with a tax liability IN ADDITION TO OTHER FEDERAL AND STATE TAX FORMS. The UAH tax assistance program (VITA) will help you for FREE to complete the CORRECT 2010 tax forms. F and J students should in general, not complete tax forms using “TURBO TAX” like software advertised for U.S. Citizen Taxpayers who complete a 1040 form. All students will need to have a completed form 8843 in order to obtain free tax assistance from the UAH VITA program.

*Remember all UAHuntsville employees can download their W-2 from their BANNER account under the EMPLOYEE tab.*

Résumé Writing & Interviewing Skills Workshop
Local Nonprofit agency, Asha Kiran, is hosting a FREE workshop on résumé writing and interviewing skills open to all students.  Join the group on February 19, 2011 at 2:00pm on UAHuntsville campus.  Remember, F-1 students MUST attend an off campus workshop for details on Immigration Policies to understand eligibility and federal laws related to off-campus employment for F-1 students.
