Announcements for the week of March 12-19, 2010

SPRING BREAK ADVISING
During spring break, next week we will have normal walk-in advising Monday-Thursday. Friday ALL University offices will be closed.

TAX ASSISTANCE-
REMINDER: students who have worked in 2009 need to include their SSN on the form 8843 (top right section of the form where it asks for taxpayer ID)

If you did not work in the U.S. in 2009 then form 8843 is the ONLY form you must complete and mail to the IRS to be in tax compliance. If you earned any income from a U.S. source in 2009 then you will complete the form 8843 and will probably have additional tax forms to complete. To get FREE assistance with tax filing, make an appointment to meet with a VITA tax volunteer at one of the SATURDAY tax sessions.

At this time the tax appointments remaining are available on April 3 or April 10 at 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm.

YOU CAN MAKE A TAX APPOINTMENT AS SOON AS YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE FORM 8843. TO MAKE A VITA TAX APPOINTMENT: 1. Complete the 8843 form and save it under your full name. 2. Email tax@uah.edu a. In the subject write "tax appointment". b. Include your full name and phone number c. List your top three preferences for an appointment day/time d. ATTACH the completed form 8843 to the email 3. An email response will be sent to you from tax@uah.edu to confirm your appointment time or suggest a different appointment time if none of your preferences is available. 4. Read the confirmation email to be sure you have the information you need to come prepared to your appointment. 5. If you fail to show up at your designated appointment time, you will not be given another appointment. Email tax@uah.edu 24 hours in advance of your scheduled appointment if you need to cancel or reschedule.

IMMIGRATION QUESTIONS? IMMIGRATION ATTORNEY HAS ANSWERS!
Once again, we are hosting an immigration attorney, Steve Springer with David Ware and Associates, to come to campus and provide information to the public (students and others) regarding immigration options after graduating from UAHuntsville. The attorney will provide information regarding the options available to individuals wishing to work or immigrate to the U.S., which is NOT the area of expertise of the ISSO. Please plan to attend this presentation to educate yourself about general immigration laws.

WHEN: Monday, April 12th at 2:15pm
WHERE: Shelby Center room 109

OFF-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT
Any F-1 student interested in pursuing employment off-campus must obtain work permission from immigration prior to working. Off-campus employment includes internships, Cooperative Education or other practical training. Our office offers the employment workshops to help ensure you understand the options available. Students MUST attend a workshop before an advisor will meet with you to discuss your individual questions. Email visahelp@uah.edu to reserve a space in a workshop (space is limited to 10 students). ALL workshops will be held in the UC room 132 (small room on the back hallway of the UC BEHIND the lobby)
April 9, 3:00-4:30 (Friday)
