Announcements for March 9 to 16 2012

Off campus employment workshops - two NEW dates announced follow the link to register:  http://tinyurl.com/6lo6kkj

All workshops will be in SALMON LIBRARY MEDIA ROOM 111 - please use this link to reserve a spot and email visahelp@uah.edu if you have any questions.  Priority deadline for students completing degree requirements in May wishing to apply for OPT is already past (February 6 2012)! When you register using the google DOCUMENT (mandatory) you will receive a confirmation email 2 days prior to the workshop - if there are less than 5 students registered the ISSO may cancel and reschedule the workshop to accommodate more students.

Are you traveling outside of the United States during Spring Break?

If you plan to leave the U.S. during spring break you need a travel signature on your SEVIS I-20 record to get back in (along with your passport, visa, etc).  Sigantures of DSOs (international student advisors) are technically good for 1 year while you are a full time student but the ISSO likes to sign every semester to show the students good faith effort in reporting and sharing travel plans with the international student advisors.

Please drop off your new I-20 with a completed request form with all travel information and passport expiration date, etc.  Also you should ensure that the I-20 is accurate (major, financial information, etc)

If you are traveling and do not have a travel signature please drop off your I-20 very soon with the completed form to give advisors adequate time to fulfill your request.

TAX Assistance - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

If you were physically present in the U.S. any day in the year 2011, you will need to complete a tax form 8843 for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Students and their dependent spouses/children who have not worked in the U.S. in the tax year 2011 or who have earned less than $3800 in taxable income or scholarships ONLY need to complete the tax form 8843 and mail it to the IRS by April 17, 2012. Please refer to the attached form 8843 and instructions for individuals with NO TAX LIABILITY to complete this required form. Again, a completed form 8843 is all that an F1, F2, J1, or J2 student or scholar will need to complete if they have no tax liability.

Once again the College of Business Beta Alpha Psi Accounting Honor Society to offer FREE tax assistance to the UAHuntsville students and community who received more than $3800 in income or scholarships and likely have a tax liability.  The tax form 8843 must be completed using the instructions attached for students with a tax liability IN ADDITION TO OTHER FEDERAL AND STATE TAX FORMS. The UAH tax assistance program (VITA) will help you for FREE to complete the CORRECT 2011 tax forms. F and J students should in general, not complete tax forms using "TURBO TAX" like software advertised for U.S. Citizen Taxpayers who complete a 1040 form.
