The Office of Student Activities is hosting Week of Welcome 2012, through Saturday, January 14. ISSO Orientation Spring 2012

All F-1 students should be registered FULL TIME and tomorrow (FRIDAY) is the end of the add/drop period. Graduate students should be in 9 credit hours and undergraduate students in 12 credit hours per Federal Regulations. (If you have submitted an RCL you will receive an email soon to confirm)

REMINDER Monday January 16 - UAHuntsville will be closed in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. There are no classes on campus Monday - enjoy the long weekend!

ISSO Office Closed December 23 2011 to January 2 2012

Advisors are in office through Thursday December 22 conducting normal walk-in advising. The University will close December 22 for the winter break.

TRAVEL SIGNATURE on SEVIS I-20 Record Required Upon Entry

A travel signature on page 3 of the SEVIS I-20 is needed from an international student advisor when you enter the United States not upon departure. Besides the I-20 with travel signature no older than one year, students must be maintaining F-1 status, have passport with at least 6 months validity and valid F-1 visa stamp to enter the United States.

If you have an emergency on the University during winter break, please contact the Public Safety Office 2568246911. In an off-campus emergency call 911.

Harvest Dinner on Monday November 14

A FREE home-style North American Thanksgiving meal will be served from 4:30 to 7:30pm in the Baptist Campus Ministries Center (450 Sparkman Drive near Holmes Ave) Dinner includes turkey, dressing and all the trimmings; vegetarian options will be available and desserts will be plentiful!

A reservation is not required, but in order to guarantee that there is enough food for everyone please register by 5:00pm on Wednesday November 9th. Registered guests are eligible for door prizes!

International Student Signing Days and Travel Preparation

As in the past, the International Student Advisors are setting aside a number of times where F-1 students can drop by the UC 116 to obtain a travel signature (required for re-entry to the U.S. after international travel) and talk with an advisor regarding any travel or visa preparations. We encourage ALL students traveling outside of the U.S. over winter break to take advantage of coming to the office during "signing days" as it will ensure an expedited I-20 signature and makes the travel signature process more efficient for our students and the ISSO. In addition we will provide some light snacks to enjoy in case there is a short wait time to see an advisor. In order to ensure that the travel signing process is smooth and efficient for ALL involved, please complete the questions below A MINIMUM of 48 hours PRIOR to the date you intend to come by the UC 116 to get your I-20 signed for travel. Be sure to bring the MOST RECENT issued I-20 form to signing day. Students should remember that registration for the spring 2012 semester must be completed before bringing your I-20 to an advisor during a signing day. Spring registration opens November 8; contact your academic department for details on registration and to learn if you need a code to register or if you will be registered by your academic advisor.

Open to all UAHuntsville students & scholars who have had an experience traveling/living abroad (international students in the U.S. are living abroad).

SUBMISSION CRITERIA:

The photos should depict the people or places of a particular culture. No more than two (2) photos per person.

Submitted pictures should have a minimum resolution of 3000 wide * 2400 high (7.2 Megapixels)

Winners of the photo contest will be contacted via email to submit the original photo.

PHOTO SUBMISSION DEADLINE:

JUDGING AND PRIZES:

UAH Scholarship Application

The UAHuntsville scholarship application for the 2012/2013 academic year is available. To be considered for the first round of departmental awards, the priority date for scholarship application submission is December 1, 2011. UAHuntsville has only one scholarship application and it is only available online. The online application may be accessed through the following website: http://finaid.uah.edu/index.php.

UAH Homecoming Begins Monday October 10th

Reminder: Graduation Application Deadlines

Graduation application deadlines are fast approaching.

Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration

The Office of Multicultural Affairs will host Andres Lara,
nationally known speaker, and former president of Inspiration
Time Magazine as the keynote speaker for two lectures during
the UAHuntsville Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration.
Lara's first lecture will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday,
September 29 in Frank Franz Hall room 138 and
his second lecture, "How to Turn Setbacks into
Comebacks: Challenging the Status Quo," will
be at 7:30 p.m., in the University Center Exhibit
Hall. For additional information, contact
the Office of Multicultural Affairs at (256) 824-6822.

In addition, student organizations and the Office of
Multicultural Affairs will be celebrating the Latino culture
on Friday, September 30 at 12:30 p.m. at the slab
outside the University Center. The event will feature
free food, music and a piñata.

UAH InFocus Trip

InFocus invites all students to the Fall
Break Field Trip to the Country Music
Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville
Tennessee on Saturday October 8 2011.

Nashville is a beautiful city and the center
of the country music. The museum will give
students the heart of the American culture.
The group will eat lunch together at a famous
restaurant, do sightseeing downtown, and enjoy
the country music at the museum.
InFocus will provide a school bus for the trip.

Because of limited seats in the bus, those
interested need to register early by paying
the museum entrance fee. The entrance fee
is $16.5 but the first 40 registrants will get
InFocus discount of $15. The registration
deadline is October 3 (Monday).

- InFocus meeting at the game room of
Charger Village on Thursday (7:00 - 9:00 PM).

UAH Scholarship Application

Please be aware that the UAHuntsville scholarship
application for the 2012/2013 academic year
becomes available October 1, 2011. To be
considered for the first round of departmental
awards, the priority date for scholarship
application submission is December 1, 2011.
UAHuntsville has only one scholarship application
and it is only available online. The online application
may be accessed through the following website:

Spring 2012 Spring Break Trip to Washington DC from Huntsville: March 18 - 24 2012

SGA is Sponsoring a fantastic Spring Break trip to our nations capitol! The trip cost is $100 but students interested in going must turn in a $25 deposit to save a space. Limited spaces remain, half of the slots are already full. Students who have a SSN need to share that with SGA, students without an SSN are still able to go but must provide a photocopy of the passport page. (This will be used for the White House visit.) The group will also visit Congress and other famous landmarks.

All students on an F-1 visa are encouraged to carry passports on the trip to DC and should verify that they have a valid passport (at least 6 months of validity) from March 2012 (expiring no earlier than September 2012)

A $25 deposit will hold your spot, the remainder due on or before February 15, 2012. Hurry - space is limited! Payment made in UC 106A - deadline to register September 30 or when spots are full!

It is imperative to keep an updated address at all times for Immigration reporting and University records. Please ensure a local address (must be physical livingaddress) AND active foreign addresses are correct by checking your Banner record. Also, each student is encouraged to keep an active mailing address. Please complete a change of address form <http://chargercentral.uah.edu/docs/changeAddress.pdf> in Charger Central or using Banner if the current information in the student record is not accurate.

Non Driver ID/Official Identification Concerns

The state of Alabama has passed new legislation requiring each person to have physical evidence showing they reside legally in the U.S. As a result, The International Student Advisors recommend that each F-1/J-1 student carry the following documentation to maintain compliance with the law:

When on campus:

UAH student ID and AL State Non-Driver’s ID OR an valid AL Driver’s License

When off campus:

UAH student ID and AL Non-Driver ID OR a valid AL Driver’s License

Photocopies of I-20 or DS-2019, I-94 card, passport photo page, and student visa stamp (when applicable)

We suggest that students keep all original documents: I-20, passport, and I-94 card in a safe place to avoid the risk of misplacing documents; We expect that having a UAH student ID, a valid ID issued by the state of AL and a photocopy of the above mentioned immigration documents will constitute reasonable evidence to demonstrate that a student legally resides in the United States for an authorized period of study.

Please know that due to the recent passing of this law and the Federal government’s challenges of the constitutionality of the law there is still a lot of uncertainty regarding the enforcement of the law.

If there are changes to this recommendation the ISSO Advisors will send additional guidance in our future weekly announcements.

Obtaining an AL Non-Driver ID OR an AL Driver’s License

-Student with a Social Security Number (SSN)

1) Visit Charger Central UC 118 for an Enrollment Verification letter prior to visiting the AL Department of Public Safety to apply for an AL Non-Driver’s ID or an AL Driver’s License.

2) Take your Social Security Card, all original immigration documents, and an Enrollment Verification letter from Charger Central to apply for a state ID or an AL Driver’s License. (Enrollment Verification letter is only valid for 30 days after it is issued).

-Students without a SSN

1) Visit the ISSO to submit a request for a SSA verification letter

2) Visit the Social Security Administration with the SSA verification letter (no later than 30 days after it has been issued by an ISSO Advisor), I-20, Passport, I-94 card, and Enrollment Verification from Charger Central (that was issued within 30 days).

3) After receiving the non-eligibility letter from the SSA bring the non-eligibility letter, immigration documents and Enrollment Verification Letter to the AL Department of Public Safety to apply for an AL state ID. Enrollment Verification Letter must have been issued less than 30 days prior for it to be considered valid by the AL Public Safety Office.

For students who have an AL Non-Driver ID and later want to apply for an AL Driver’s License without a SSN

1) Take AL ID card, the SSA non-eligibility letter (a verbal statement from AL Public Safety indicates the SSA non-eligibility letter does not expire 30 days after issuance), with original immigration documents (Passport, I-20, I-94) and an a current Enrollment Verification letter from Charger Central to the AL Department of Public Safety to apply for an AL Driver’s License.

*If students experience difficulty and are told something differently than what is included here please let an International Student Advisor know by email or visiting us during walk-in advising hours so we can be sure our students have accurate information.

Reminder walk-in advising hours for summer end Friday August 5, 2011
